Good To Know!

May 16, 2017:  Last Minute Details

May Madness 2017 is just a few days away. Here are a few updates / reminders:

- There will be a 50-50 raffle during the Friday concert in the park from 6-7pm. Be sure to bring cash to buy raffle tickets. The person with the winning ticket could be you.

- A revised schedule has been posted on the website along with a description of the workshops.

- The workshops are open to the general public. If you know someone who hasn't registered for the weekend but would like to attend a workshop, a $10 donation is requested. All workshops are free for dancers that have registered for the weekend.

- Help with packing up at the end of the weekend is always welcome. Thank you in advance if you can spare some time to help out after the dance is over.

- Public wi-fi should be available near the main entrance to the hall.

From Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, there will be plenty of contra dancing day and night in the dance hall. In addition, workshops for dancers and musicians will be offered during the day in other parts of the building.

You’ll love the INCREDIBLE TALENT of two amazing bands, Mean Lids and Riptide. Cis Hinkle and Susan Petrick will expertly guide the dancing fun. May Madness ends on Sunday with a dance finale from 1:30 – 3:30.

There is SPACE AVAILABLE for a few more dancers to join us for this exciting weekend. As of May 8, there is no one on the waitlist.  But single ‘follow’ dancers may be on a wait list until an equal number of single lead dancers register.  If you know of anyone who would delight in a weekend of music and dancing, please invite them to sign up.

SCHEDULE: The preliminary dance and workshop schedule is available on the website on the ‘Schedule and Workshops’ page. The final schedule including workshops will be posted on the website soon, and will be posted at the hall. Limited paper copies of the schedule will also be available at the hall. You are encouraged to print a copy of the final schedule before you arrive or download it to your portable device.

FRIDAY NIGHT THEME: This year’s Friday night dance will have a theme:  Wear your favorite (non-political) t-shirt- It could have a saying on it, be from an event, a special location, or favorite trip.

FOOD: Healthy, delicious, and plentiful snacks will be available throughout the weekend, including a light breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. No full meals will be provided. We will try to provide some vegetarian and gluten-free options.  We won’t be able to cater to all dietary restrictions, though, so if you need special food, please bring it. Our schedule will give you time to explore the area between Jerome, Clarkdale and Cottonwood where you’ll find a variety of great eating options.

Check out the ‘Food’ webpage for more details including our ‘grab and go’ set-up.
A restaurant list is available on the website.  Limited copies will be available in the hall.  If you are interested in the restaurant list, you are encouraged to print a copy of it before you arrive or download it to your portable device.

RAFFLE: Support young dancers and the May Madness scholarship fund by buying tickets or bringing items for our May Madness raffle.  Check your closets and drawers for beautiful items that your friends will cherish (or at least bid on).  Raffle items could include artwork, chocolate, musical instruments, books, jewelry, music, chocolate and non-perishable food treats, and other miscellaneous tchotchkes and baubles.  Donations of chocolate for our ever-popular chocolate baskets are always welcome.  Buy your tickets early and often as the raffle will end Saturday night with winners announced on Sunday morning.
Please bring your donated items to the hall on Friday.  If you can drop them off before going to the concert, that will help us with getting everything set up for the raffle.

CLOTHING EXCHANGE: Are you getting tired of that same old shirt? Favorite skirt getting a little tight or loose? Need a new swirly skirt or t-shirt to round out your collection? Bring your clean, new-ish dance clothes and shoes to the clothing exchange and trade them in on a new look. Any items not adopted during the weekend will be donated to Goodwill.

GETTING TO CLARKDALE is an easy 2-hour drive from Phoenix or 1 hour from Flagstaff. The historic town of Clarkdale is located in the beautiful Verde Valley of Northern Arizona.  If you plan to carpool you may find rides or riders on our Facebook page, May Madness Dancers on Facebook. From the airport, you may also take the Cottonwood Shuttle.

LODGING AND CAMPING sites may be limited. The Cottonwood area is a popular destination this time of year.  If you don’t have a room already, be sure to book your space right away! A wide range of possibilities are available to you in nearby Cottonwood and a little further away in Sedona and Camp Verde. You can also find a room in the nearby historic ghost town of Jerome. Please visit our website for suggestions about where to stay in the area.

Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood has been a good camping option. The park has sites for tents and trailers, with or without electric hook ups, great hot showers and opportunities for other activities in a beautiful riparian setting.
Unfortunately there don’t appear to be any sites available May 19-21.  Sharing a campsite with other dancers might be an option thru our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/maymadnessdancers

To STAY CONNECTED with other May Madness dancers, join our Facebook page. Here you can chat about getting or offering a ride, sharing rooms or campsites, exploring the area around Clarkdale, or just see who else is excited about the weekend.  Please consider checking the FB page if you’re able to help out fellow dancers.

ROSTER: The preliminary May Madness Roster has been emailed to everyone registered. It won’t have the late-comers on it yet, but it might help you find someone to carpool or share a room with. Please look your own information over, and e-mail Judy at judy.norman@juno.com with updates or changes. Please make a copy for your use during the weekend. A final roster will be emailed after the weekend.

PACKING LIST:  Here are some suggestions of things to bring to keep you safe and comfortable in the warm, dry climate of northern Arizona.

  • A reusable water container and coffee mug. We will have plenty of liquids on hand including filtered water, but it helps with the recycling situation to cut down on the number of cups we use. There will be marking pens to put your name on your own cup and water bottle. No open containers are allowed on the wood floor in the dance hall.
  • Light, loose, comfortable clothing. The chance of extra-warm weather is probably greater than the chance of rain!
  • Several extra t-shirts if you tend to get damp while dancing. We will have fans, evaporative cooling, and adequate air flow, but extra changes are usually a good idea.
  • Soft soled shoes that are comfortable and easy to dance in, but separate from street shoes to help protect the dance floor
  • Several extra pairs of cushiony socks
  • A lawn chair or blanket for Friday’s outdoor concert in the park
  • A sun hat and sunscreen for prowling around the Clarkdale area in the day time
  • Musical instruments and/ or recording devices for workshops and jam sessions
  • Your raffle items and any clothes destined for the clothing exchange.
  • Extra $ for the 50-50 raffle, Mean Lids and Riptide CD’s, treasures from the May Madness raffle.
  • Flyers and information to share about your home dances and events

Please DO NOT BRING pets or alcohol. The Town of Clarkdale has a no alcohol policy for public places including the dance hall. A few short blocks away in town there are some fine watering holes with cool, refreshing beverages.

Also, please bring your unscented hygiene and beauty products for the weekend as a courtesy to your friends with chemical sensitivities.

BYO CUP: You are encouraged to bring your own cup for coffee and hot drinks, and don’t forget your water bottle. We will also have the traditional May Madness mug adoption option again this year to help us minimize trash. You may adopt your own ceramic mug from the collection of gently used May Madness mugs for just a $1 donation. If you love your selection, you are welcome to take it home after camp.
